Information For Authors

Big History seeks to understand the integrated history of the Cosmos, Earth, Life, and Humanity, using the best available empirical evidence and scholarly methods.  The Journal of Big History (JBH), published by the International Big History Association, welcomes submissions of original scholarly articles that serve this objective.

Style

  • We suggest using the Chicago Manual of Style. However, big history is an interdisciplinary field; we accept the use of a style that is standard in your home discipline.
  • The JBH is flexible on article length; many submissions are about 10,000 words.

Please contact us at jbh@bighistory.org with questions or comments.  Submissions may be emailed to the editor there as well.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  •  Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  •  The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. The author is responsible for obtaining any needed copyright permssions for images or any copyrighted material.
  •  The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in Submissions.
  •  If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
